Plant Experience
Detail
Japanese rose or Portulaca Grandiflora Hybrid is very common in Malaysia. It is a spreading, low-growing plant, growing close to the ground.
It can be grown as ground cover, like a grass carpet with its bright, colourful flowers.
It can be grown as borders, to line foot paths or as front liners. It can also be placed in hanging pots or raised up on walls or stands, to show off its attractive flowers.
These plants love the sun and will be in full bloom in the bright morning sun.
In the afternoon to early morning before the sun is up, the flowers will stay closed up as buds. The stems are in reddish or greenish colour.
The leaves are thick, succulent and like thick pine needles. Certain species have broader leaves.
These plants are drought tolerant and are conversely very susceptible to damage from over-watering. Make sure to plant them in very well-drained soil, and be careful when watering container-grown plants to make sure they are not over-watered. They require bright direct sunlight in order to thrive and flower. Possible pest problems are aphids, which can be controlled by washing off with water or spraying with mild soapy water.
Light Preference: Full Sun
Water Preference: Little Water
Plant Growth Rate: Fast
Maintenance Requirements: Moderate
Propagation Method: Seed, Stem Cutting
