I'm not quite sure how this happened, but will it survive? Is there anything I can do to help it? I'm worried the stem is going to break it half.

meriunkat: you may also remove some of the bottom leaves and use to try to propagate as well
meriunkat: it's rotting, too much water
best thing to do is cut the rotted part a way and let it dry till the bottom part seals before potting it
when you do pot it do not water it right away to avoid more rotting

Brittany Paterson NJ: Aerial roots also grow if there is humidity in the air. They are totally fine and won’t harm anything.
Ueca: This doesn't necessarily mean you're not watering it enough. It could also indicate that the roots in the soil are functioning poorly.
meriunkat: roots that grow out of the stem because the plant is not getting enough water so it starts looking for water that way
Molly: it's aerial root.

Ueca: This is a Sempervivum. Plant it into any spot of soil in your yard, or anywhere that gets fresh air. If in a yard, check at night to make sure slugs aren't trying to eat it.
Usually just leaving it alone in the front yard is a pretty good plan.
